The Disney version is, incomparably, the “tamest” of all the versions. In the original version, a King (and not a prince) comes upon a woman sleeping in the forest, rapes her, and impregnates her, and the woman awakens nine months later when her twin babies are born. Then the King comes back, and the two fall in love. But they face a big problem: The King is married, and his Queen is pissed. She attempts to cook the twin babies born to Sleeping Beauty and her former rapist and current lover, and to have Sleeping Beauty burnt at the stake. I’m sure that there are also dozens or hundreds of less quality breeders including puppy mills in the state. But the above links are where I would start any search looking for an ethical breeder producing healthy dogs. There are at least four that are members in good standing of the national breed club and AKC breeders of merit: National Shiba Club of America Breeder Referral. There are also two regional breed clubs in California: Shiba Club of Southern California and Shiba Fanciers of Northern California.
